In this article, we reflect on Keystone Education Group’s recent “Clearing Survival Guide” webinar, adding our own perspective to offer a fresh take on international student Clearing. One thing’s certain: universities that treat Clearing as a global opportunity, not just a domestic fallback, are the ones set to thrive.
International students are still making decisions late into the admissions cycle. Clearing gives you a golden window to connect, support, and convert – but you need to be ready with the right strategy.
Start early, stay ahead
January and February should be all about foundations. Budget planning, staff training, and visa readiness all need to be in place early. A clear communications plan, tailored for different markets, helps you build trust before students even start looking in earnest.
Build the buzz
By March, engagement needs to pick up. Roll out targeted social campaigns, program-led webinars, and region-specific content. Obviously, popular platforms vary by country – TikTok, WeChat, LINE – so be present where it counts. And with global time zones in play, ensure your support team is geared up for 24/7 responsiveness.
Adapt Your Message
Messaging for international audiences needs a careful shift – from one of missed opportunity to one of new beginnings. These students aren’t just looking for a place, they’re looking for reassurance, clarity, and a strong sense of support. Focus on success stories, visa guidance, and tangible ways your university helps students settle and thrive.
Shape a regionally smart marketing strategy
Marketing should feel familiar to your audience. That means region-specific landing pages, translated content, and FAQs tailored to key concerns like accommodation, scholarships, and visa processes. Use the right channels for each market, i.e., TikTok and Instagram in some, WeChat or LINE in others. To increase your efforts more use geo-targeted paid campaigns. Ambassador-led content, video Q&As, and localised stories all help build connection and trust.
Test and tweak
May and June are for pressure testing. Finalise your Clearing targets, run mock admissions scenarios, and schedule key campaigns. Reminder emails and retargeting ads help keep your university front of mind just as students start finalising decisions.
Ready for Action
In the final two weeks before Clearing, it’s time to switch gears. Systems should be stress-tested, international hotlines staffed, and messaging crystal clear. This is when quick decisions and confident support really matter.
Speak their language
International students want to see opportunity, reassurance, and practical information. Share visa support timelines, bursary options, and success stories from international alumni who’ve been in their shoes.
Literally and culturally. Translated content, regional landing pages, and FAQs tailored to visa and accommodation concerns go a long way. Use student ambassadors in live Q&As and short-form video to make your university feel approachable and real.
